To Change E-mail Settings...

(You may want to print this for your files.)

For MicroSoft Outlook, for PC or Macintosh
  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click on "Tools".
  3. Click on "Accounts".
  4. When the "Internet Account" window comes up, click on the "Mail" tab.
  5. Click on your mohawk account to make sure it is highlighted, then click on "Properties" on the right.
  6. When the 'Properties' window comes up click on the tab on top that says "Servers". Verify that the INCOMING and OUTGOING mail is set to 'mail.mohawk.net' Your incoming mail server may be either 'POP3' or 'IMAP'. Then, at the bottom of the screen there is a line that says "Outgoing Mail Server". Click to put a check in the box that says "My server requires authentication".
  7. Now click on the "Advanced" tab on the top of the window. It will say 'Outgoing mail [SMPT]' with the number 25. This is correct. Make no changes here. Skip down to 'Incoming Mail'. It may be indicated as either [IMAP] or [POP3] (the distinction between these two is explained at the end of this document). You need to check the box under 'Incoming mail' which says 'This server requires a secure connection [SSL]'. Observe that the number in the box above has changed. If your Incoming mail is [IMAP] then the number should be 993 (as shown). If your Incoming mail is [POP3] then the number should be 995.
  8. Click "Apply" at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Now click 'OK' to close out all the windows including the Outlook program.
  10. Make sure you are connected to the internet. Go to Outlook and push 'Send and Receive Mail'.
  11. A window will come up asking if you want to accept an unknown certificate. It is this certificate which will be the encryption key for your email. Answer "YES" to accept the certificate (forever if the option is offered). You now will be able to send and receive your email.
  12. WHY WE HAVE MADE THIS CHANGE:
This change was started in September. When our mail server was destroyed by the windstorm in October, we decided that we would complete the transition to secure email transmissions. This is the accepted norm for ISPs today.

Older security methods left email text in world readable form. But now that spammers have taken up reading passing email and capturing addresses from them, it is a simple matter of security that you want your email encrypted, not just for spam control, but also to protect the privacy of your messages.

Clearly, changing an entire customer base over to a new system has been dramatic to customers and staff alike. We wish we had a magic wand to make it painless. But the benefits outweigh the hassles. And we hope ultimately you will agree with us. It would be less work for Mohawk to just let the old ways prevail, but it would also be irresponsible. We are working to make mohawk ever better, and we thank you for your patience with us as we try.

    ABOUT IMAP -vs- POP3:
POP3 is the normal way to set up your mail server. Most users will want to have their mail server be POP3. If you are POP3, then when you request your mail it is downloaded to YOUR computer, where you can save, toss, or file each email as you see fit. No copy remains on our server. (be sure NOT to check the box 'Leave mail on Server' or you will defeat this function.)

IMAP is an alternative way to set up your mail server. There are users who will wish to be able to check their mail from any computer anywhere in the world. IMAP allows this. The mail is retained on our servers unless you explicitly delete it. The benefit is that you can refer to your mail from any computer. The draw back is that your mail is not safely stored anywhere, for as you can see, even an ISP mail server with automated backup and battery power can be destroyed by an act of nature, whereupon all the un-POP'ed mail is gone for ever and not recoverable. You may also have security reasons to want your mail POP'ed rather than world accessable.

Once a mail server is defined, it can not be changed. You must delete that 'account' and create a fresh one. This does not mean any mail will be lost, but it is best to consider how you will use your mail.

Remember, Mohawk is a full service ISP. We can move, change, or customize your mail handling to meet your needs, now and in the future. We are here to help you if your needs change. Thank you for being a Mohawk customer!
